This reading followed two individuals, Novella Carpenter and bill (her boyfriend) who have settled in around Oakland, California. The neighborhood they settle in has been given the name Ghost Town, and for good reason. We can draw relations from Black Food Geographies to go ahead and consider Novella’s situation a food dessert. To combat the lack of food the two set up a garden that goes on to feed them and others in the community, sometimes out of kindness, other times by force. Even with stealing and the negatives that come out of the situation, this idea to start an at-home garden helped develop a sense of community, something I believe these food desserts need to finally start striding to make change. If you don’t have a foundation, it will mae things that much more difficult.
