Food Studies is an interdisciplinary study which looks at how humans and food interact and define one another. Food studies can be multidisciplinary, meaning it is studied by professionals from a broad range of fields such as psychology and agriculture. It can also be interdisciplinary, meaning one study can involve multiple areas of expertise such as business and history. Food studies can be approached from various angles, like those mentioned before, to better understand our relationship to food. Food impacts us on personal levels, guiding what we eat, how we associate foods, and how we express ourselves. While many fields study how food and humans interact, courses about food studies are rare due to the Western “mind over body” philosophies. This is unfortunate because the study of food can tell us about the lives of those before us, including their beliefs, migration patterns, and changes over time.
